EC-MUG Medium is a selective microbiological culture medium developed for the rapid detection and confirmation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) in drinking water, source water, municipal water systems, and environmental water samples. Widely used in water quality testing, public health laboratories, and environmental monitoring programs, EC-MUG Medium combines selective growth conditions with fluorogenic substrate technology to deliver accurate and reliable E. coli detection.

The medium contains lactose, bile salts, and MUG (4-Methylumbelliferyl-β-D-Glucuronide), allowing simultaneous bacterial growth and enzymatic identification. Most E. coli strains produce β-glucuronidase, which hydrolyzes MUG and releases a fluorescent compound that emits a distinctive blue-white fluorescence under 366 nm UV light. This rapid screening method supports microbial contamination detection, drinking water safety assessment, regulatory compliance testing, and routine microbiological analysis.
